The purpose of mankind\u00a0<sup>1,2<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To understand the purpose of mankind we need to understand the role of human beings both at the individual level &#8211; <em>nafs <\/em>&#8211; and the collective level &#8211;<em> unfus<\/em> &#8211; as well as the level of the external world &#8211; <em>af&#8217;aque<\/em> &#8211; since the Qur&#8217;an is very clear on these issues. The underlying purpose of all three identities i.e. the <em>nafs,<\/em> the <em>unfus<\/em> and the <em>af&#8217;aque<\/em>, is to return to Allah.
